One of the strongest mechanisms influencing human behavior is the rule of reciprocity. This is a psychological principle that states that people who receive something from us feel an internal need to reciprocate – for a gift or a favor. This mechanism works because in most cultures, there is a deeply ingrained norm of striving for balance in social relationships.
The rule of reciprocity as one of the key principles of influence was described and popularized by American social psychologist Robert Cialdini in the book Influence: Science and Practice. Research cited by Cialdini shows that even a small, symbolic gift significantly increases the willingness to take action on behalf of the person or organization from which it was received, regardless of its real material value.
How does this translate to fundraising?
Because people have a natural need to reciprocate kindness, even a small gift can trigger a sense of emotional obligation. That’s why fundraising gadgets can become more than just an addition to a campaign – they can be the first step in building a long-term relationship with the donor.
Given the above, a fundraising gadget should become an indispensable element of every envelope mailing, but not only. It can also be given during a direct meeting or at events.
How to choose the right gadget?
However, it is crucial that the gadgets are not random. The gift should reinforce the organization’s mission, fit into the campaign narrative, and be appropriate for the context or season. Spring and the Easter season provide a natural opportunity to communicate values such as renewal, hope, and community.
In the next part of the article, we show how to use the principle of reciprocity in practice – with the example of specific fundraising gadgets and spring campaigns that support the effectiveness of actions.

It’s a simple gadget that strengthens the relationship with the donor. - Easter paper craft gadgets in 3D form

A small gadget perfect for mailing envelopes. Perceptible through the envelope and audible due to the gentle rustling of the seeds.
